Man in murder-for-hire plot could face new charges

PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – A Portales man accused of plotting to kill his wife could be facing even more charges.

Cody Guss, 36, was arrested after he unknowingly paid an undercover officer $5,000 to allegedly murder his wife and stage it as a suicide.

When KRQE News 13’s Emily Younger was at Guss’ home she noticed a dead dog and dog fur in his yard as well as at least a half dozen alive dogs living in small cages with no food.

Sheriff’s deputies were called and told Guss’ grandmother who is taking care of the property, to clean it up and take care of the animals or they will be seized.

Guss could now face animal cruelty charges. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
