NM Senator wants more fire resources

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Sen. Tom Udall wants more resources available to fight wildfires in New Mexico.

The senator is proposing a bill that, if approved by Congress, would treat large fires as natural disasters and provide money to fight fires from a disaster account.

He says that would free up $412 million for firefighting efforts alone.

Udall says in the past, 30 percent of the budget allocated was used on just 1 percent of wildfires.

Sen. Udall also wants the public to help prevent and be prepared for wildfires.
