PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – A New Mexico dad is accused of plotting to kill his wife and trying to hire a hit-man to do his dirty work.
Cody Guss, 36, is accused of plotting his wife’s death in detail.
The FBI arrested Guss March 26 for trying to hire a hit-man, agreeing to pay someone $5,000 to murder her and stage it as a suicide. Officials say Guss even gave the hit-man his house key and hand-drawn map of his residence.
“I’m really shocked because I would never expect that kind of planning, plotting and violence,” said Guss’s neighbor.
According to the criminal complaint, Guss wanted his wife dead because she wasn’t a good mother.
At one point, he admitted to a man believed to a hit-man, that he didn’t like what he was doing but he had no other solution than to kill her.
Guss was caught after Amarillo police say they were tipped off about the case in February by someone in Texas that knew Guss and had overheard him say he wanted his wife dead.
The FBI got involved and together the departments went undercover to pose as Guss’s potential hit-man.
“As an individual, he was just a very strange person,” said Marcus Hart.
Marcus Hart lived next to Guss for five years and said he would often hear him yelling at his wife.
“They were fighting more than not,” Hart said.
Neighbors say Guss and his wife had been married for about 10 years.
