City hosts 1st child abuse task force meeting

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The first public outreach session for the new Child Abuse Prevention Task Force was hosted Tuesday.

The task force was created after the death of 9-year-old Omaree Varela.

The boy’s mother, Cynthia Varela-Casaus, is charged with kicking him to death in late December.

His death came despite several reports to Albuquerque Police Department and the State’s Children, Youth, and Families Department that Omaree was being abused.

On Tuesday night, task force leaders say the focus needs to be on prevention and training for first responders and CYFD investigators.

The city is planning more public meetings in the months ahead.
