Judge denies former cop, security guard office run

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A controversial fired state cop will not be allowed to run for state office.

Algin Mendez filed earlier this month to run for state rep as a democrat to represent the district between Santa Fe and Espanola.

His opponent would have been freshman democrat Carl Trujillo.

But Monday a judge ruled Mendez did not have enough valid signatures to get on the November ballot.

Mendez was fired from state police.

Rio Ariba County Sheriff Tommy Rodella later forced Mendez out of his department after Mendez was caught on tape drunk and head-butting people at Buffalo Thunder Resort.

In February, Mendez resigned as roundhouse security guard after the sheriff’s wife, Representative Debbie Rodella, filed a restraining order against him claiming Mendez repeatedly threatened her.
