Sunland dumps $2.6M worth of untainted peanut butter

PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – $2.6 million worth of peanut butter is being dumped at a New Mexico landfill.

It’s a move to speed up the sale of the bankrupt Sunland peanut plant in Portales that shutdown after being linked to a 2012 salmonella outbreak.

Officials for the company say the untainted peanut butter was made for Costco Wholesales before the plant shut down.

But Costco refused to take shipment of the product even though tests showed it was safe. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
