ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The Obama administration has decided to list the lesser prairie chicken as a threatened species. A decision the state says could be devastating to New Mexico’s economy.
The chicken is believed to live in areas across five states, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado. But its numbers have been declining.
The new listing could halt oil and gas drilling in some areas and force protections that could be a detriment to farmers and ranchers.
The concerned groups had been working with the Fish and Wildlife Service on conservation strategies to protect both sides and avoid the listing.
