Hunters who don’t draw to see refund

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The Game and Fish Department is changing up the draw process for the hunts of Bighorn Sheep, Oryx, and Ibex, giving New Mexico residents better odds.

For decades, an injunction prevented the state from giving residents preferential quotas, meaning they had the same chance to draw a license as someone from out of state.

A federal judge has now thrown out that injunction, allowing 84 percent of the licenses to go to resident hunters.

Because of the sudden change game and fish will delay this year’s draw by about a week and will refund application fees if a person doesn’t draw for Bighorn Sheep, Ibex and Oryx hunting only. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
