ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE)- In two years, one of Albuquerque’s biggest shopping areas could look very different.
Demolition on the Winrock Town Center is expected to begin by the end of this year.
Almost two years after the demolition of Winrock Inn, Goodman Realty Group is firming up dates for their new mall. Now they’re already moving dirt for new retail space.
Winrock was a popular shopping area for more than forty years, but plans to redevelop fell apart in the early 2000’s.
Most of it was boarded up and, in 2007, Goodman Realty bought it. They had big ideas like, an open-air mall, a hotel, a mini version of the Rio Grande, a rock climbing wall and a giant scuba tank.
Yet, recent renderings show they’ve scaled their ideas back a bit. The depictions show proposals for stores like DSW, Nike and Nordstrom Rack and lease negotiations are underway for shops like Ulta and Versona. There’s also space for condos or apartments, offices, a boutique hotel and a courtyard with lake features.
KRQE News 13 showed shoppers and local area residents the renderings. They say they’re ready.
“Looking forward to it. We come to the theater here all the time and I come here to Dillard’s,” says Lorenzo Moreno.
Eric Smith has lived in the area for years. He says he thinks the development will be good news for uptown.
“I think it’s great. As far as I’m concerned, anything that will revitalize this section of the city is very welcome,” explains Smith.
There is also a proposal to consolidate the Dillard’s store into one building.
Representatives say if they start demolition at the end of this year, construction could start in 2015. They think things could be open by 2016.
An IMAX theater was recently built at Winrock and so were restaurants, like B.J.’s.
