Man shot by Los Lunas police to face charges

LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – State Police continue to investigate a police shooting in Los Lunas that happened late Sunday night.

Los Lunas police spotted a stolen car in front of some apartments. When the two officers went up to the car, they say Russell Werner pointed an assault rifle at them.

The officers fired.

Werner is at UNM hospital recovering.

Investigators haven’t said how many times he was shot or how badly he was hurt, but they do say he faces a number of charges once he gets out of the hospital. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
