ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An APD K-9 is still recovering after he was shot three times by a burglar, who then turned the gun on himself.
If it weren’t for Rico, officers say the Friday’s SWAT situation could have turned out a whole lot worse.
Rico was sent in to find the burglar who refused to surrender to police in an industrial yard on San Pedro.
That’s when the suspect shot Rico three times, in his neck, through his ear and through his eardrum.
“I truly believe that the offender was probably lying in wait in that trailer and just waiting for that door to come open and he probably would have started shooting at us immediately,” said his handler, Officer Ken Ronzone.
“By him doing that, I can honestly say he saved our life that night by doing that.”
Now, the K-9 is in full recovery mode. It will be at least three or four weeks until he’s allowed to run or jump again.
After that, APD will decide if Rico must retire.
If he does, he’ll retire to his handler’s house.
