Former city employee heads to prison for embezzlement

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A former city of Albuquerque employee is going to prison for a year.

A judge has sentenced Ruben Ambriz for embezzlement.

In 2012, Ambriz stole more than $2,600 worth of parts and equipment from the City Parks Department, where he worked as an irrigation specialist.

He sold the parts on craigslist.

According to online court records, Ambriz has a rap sheet dating back a decade for things like transferring a stolen car and drug use.

When the judge handed down the sentence, he told Ambriz he betrayed public trust and that New Mexicans are sick of corruption. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
