ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A 15-year-old Valencia County boy accused of murdering his friend was formally arraigned Friday.
“Due to my client’s low mental functioning i do not believe he understands his rights or the charges against him, however at this time we enter a not guilty plea,” said Cindy Mercer, Villalobos’ lawyer.
Brandon Villalobos is facing a charge of first degree murder for the death of 12-year-old Alex Madrid.
His body was found hidden under a mattress in a field in Meadowlake in February.
Deputies say Villalobos admitted to hitting Madrid after getting into an argument.
Today a judge set bond at $500,000 cash only.
The district attorney opted to try Villalobos as an adult. That means he could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
But the judge could also decide to sentence him as a youthful offender.
