North Carolina company buys Sunland Peanuts

PORTALES, N.M. (KRQE) – A family-owned peanut processing business from North Carolina has won the auction to buy Sunland Peanut Plant in Portales.

Hampton Farms agreed to pay $20 million for the now defunct plant.

Sunland closed in October of last year after being linked to a nationwide salmonella outbreak where 41 people in 20 states got sick.

The closure left hundreds without jobs.

Last fall the company’s attorneys valued Sunland’s assets at $50 million.

But Sunland still owes three of its major creditors about $14 million. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
