NM man pleads guilty to smuggling immigrants

COLUMBUS, N.M. (KRQE) – A southern New Mexico man has pleaded guilty to smuggling people into the United States, using a village fire truck.

Samuel Elliot, and his brother Robert, both of Columbus, were arrested last September after border patrol agents found several illegal immigrants inside a trailer.

Authorities later found that Samuel used a Columbus Fire Department vehicle to transport the immigrants through a border patrol checkpoint because he had lights and sirens on he was not subject to search.

The brothers each face up to 10 years in prison.
