ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Apparently not everyone is happy with the plan to turn the Organ Mountains into a national monument.
There was standing room only at a public meeting on the issue last night.
There are proposals to protect anywhere from 55,000 to 500,000 acres of the mountain chain.
Most of those who spoke out against the proposal were nearby property owners who say the federal government has already acquired too much of their land.
Others did speak for the measure saying it will protect one of New Mexico’s treasures.
If approved the new monument would included eight new wilderness areas and be overseen by the Bureau of Land Management.
