Man gets 7th DWI after hitting elk

TAOS, N.M. (KRQE) – A Colorado man was busted for his 7th DWI here in New Mexico but how he was caught is unusual.

Police say an officer stumbled across an elk carcass in the road near Taos and then found 66-year-old Alvin Romero a few miles down the road.

They say he smelled like booze and it quickly became clear he was the one who hit the animal.

He’s now charged with DWI, leaving the scene of an accident, and driving on a suspended license. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
