HOBBS, N.M. (KRQE) – Police video shows a wild ride on the streets of Hobbs and behind the wheel was a 7-year-old girl.
The girl’s mom, Alexandrea Blakley, is in jail for allegedly letting the girl drive after she had downed some booze.
“That’s real serious and dangerous for the public,” said Hobbs Police Public Information Officer Mike Stone.
Police dashcam video shows the vehicle exiting a local Stripes parking lot Saturday afternoon.
According to police, the car can be seen driving on the sidewalk, then off the curb and back onto the road.
Detectives say when they pulled the car over they found Blakley’s daughter, 7, sitting on her lap and in full control of the vehicle.
Officials say Blakley told them she let her child drive because she wanted to.
According to the criminal complaint, police found an open beer can in Blakley’s car.
They say she also admitted to to taking two shots of rum early that morning.
However, she wasn’t charged with DWI or child abuse.
Instead, she was arrested for a few traffic citations including having an open container.
Hobbs police say additional charges could come. For now they say they’re relieved no one was injured.
“It’s a real concern for our community and probably any community for a parent to be that irresponsible to let their child operate a vehicle like that,” said Stone.
Police say Blakley was also driving with a revoked license.
According to court records, she was arrested in 2013 for DWI.
