Cat rescued from top of power pole

LAS CRUCES (KRQE) – After three long days a cat stuck high atop a power pole is finally back home.

Athena scaled the 60-foot electric pole in Las Cruces Friday night and couldn’t get down.

That left her owners, the Eason family, preparing for the worst.

They feared Athena would touch the live power line and die.

Citing safety concerns, El Paso Electric rarely scales poles to help animals.

But on Monday afternoon, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Department convinced the company to shut off the power line and use a cherry picker to bring the cat down.

An animal control worker was able to coax Athena into the bucket.

Once Athena was on the ground she was checked out by a vet and appears to be fine.

The Easons say she will be an indoor pet from now on. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
