Medal of Honor recipient gets new gravestone

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A new gravestone was unveiled for a man who got the highest level of honor in the military Saturday.

The new stone was dedicated for First Sergeant James Morris.

He was in the Army the late 1800s and was a Medal of Honor recipient during the Indian Wars in 1873.

The Marine Corps league decided to clean up his grave site but in the process something went wrong.

“While they were doing that, some vandals came and broke the gravestone. So we decided to go ahead and replace the gravestone with a more substantial gravestone and put a brass plaque on it to honor Sergeant Morris,” Jerry Murphy of the Detachment Marine Corps said.

Several Marine Corps leagues and veterans organizations donated money to help pay for the new gravestone.
