Contract not renewed for Los Lunas police chief

LOS LUNAS, N.M. (KRQE) – The Los Lunas police chief has lost his job.

New mayor Charles Griego has decided not renew Roy Melnick’s contract, which expires on Sunday.

Melnick has been with the department since 2009 and is credited with bringing in a lot of grant money for the department to buy equipment.

The mayor says he just wanted someone more in line with his philosophy and believes that is Nathan Gurule.

The mayor says they’re not required to do a nationwide search for the position.

Gurule takes over as chief on Monday. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
