Bernalillo County worker accused of stealing

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A former government employee is accused of stealing $6,500 from taxpayers in an elaborate gasoline scheme.

Nicholas Jones who used to work at the Bernalillo County Parks and Recreation Department is accused of stealing one county vehicle, breaking into others to gain access to county gas cards and stealing fellow workers social security numbers in order to use the cards.

The county noticed the cards were being used to rack up thousands of dollars in charges in a 10 day period at a non county gas station.

When investigators looked at surveillance video they recognized Jones and saw him paying for the gas of everyone at the gas station in exchange for cash.

Officials say Jones was a good worker but suddenly stopped showing up for work and does have a history of drug addiction.
