ABQ prepares for a safe St. Patrick’s Day weekend

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Officers and local bars are stepping up efforts to prevent accidents this St. Patrick’s Day weekend.

Dozens of extra officers from multiple agencies will be out patrolling, trying to catch drunk drivers. The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department and APD are each planning on sending 10-15 extra officers out on the roads.

APD, NMSP, and BCSD will all have DWI checkpoints at undisclosed locations.

Several bars across town will also be providing incentives for drivers to stay sober. At some bars, designated drivers will be able to get free sodas and if necessary staff say they will call taxis for party-goers.

“If we did have someone that was intoxicated that came onto our property from somewhere else, we work diligently to get them home safely,” said Robert Munro, co-owner of O’Niell’s Pub in Albuquerque.
