Man dies after officer involved shooting

FARMINGTON, N.M. (KRQE) – One man is dead after an incident with Farmington Police that ended in an officer involved shooting.

Farmington Police Department said 26-year-old John Robert Marszalek II died from his injuries Wednesday.

According to FPD, the incident began at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday when officers responded to the 3500 block of East Main Street on a reckless driving call. Police say the suspect fled the scene, hit an unmarked police unit and continued eastbound.

FPD said the pursuit was called off shortly after due to heavy traffic.

After leaving city limits, the suspect returned and hit a marked police unit. As officers were trying to take the suspect into custody, he began to inflict injuries to himself.

The incident ended in an officer involved shooting and Marszalek was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center. FPD said he later succumbed to his injuries.

KRQE News 13 has learned that this incident is under investigation. FPD said it is not clear if Marszalek died from the injuries he inflicted on himself or the shooting incident.
