Jury: Officer-involved shooting was justified

SANTA FE (KRQE) – A Santa Fe grand jury has ruled a deadly police shooting – where an officer was also shot – was justified.

District Attorney Angela Spence-Pacheco released audio Wednesday of the October incident.

State Police went to the Los Lomas Apartments in Española to find Rogelio Cisneros-Chavez. He had a warrant out for his arrest and was accused of stealing money from his family.

“Specifically, his father,” said Spence-Pacheco. “It was approximately $6,000 in cash. The father had been saving the money so he could take the family on a vacation.”

When police entered the apartment, Cisneros-Chavez fired at least one shot, hitting Joey Gallegos in the abdomen. State Police returned fire, shooting Cisneros-Chavez a few times, killing him.

Agent Gallegos is recovering and hopes to be back to work soon.
