Dog trapper defends his actions

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A man accused of trapping his neighbor’s dogs says he had good reason.

A woman found a neighbor’s Chihuahua caught in a leg trap last weekend in the Los Chavez area near Los Lunas.

The man who set the traps on his property told police he did it to protect his small livestock.

That man, B.J. Winchester, is an inspector for the New Mexico Livestock Board.

The dog owners call it animal cruelty, but Animal Protection of New Mexico says it is legal. They say Winchester is allowed to set the leg hold traps on his own property. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
