Students ask for gender-neutral bathrooms

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – UNM’s Queer-Straight Alliance is pushing for more gender-free restrooms on campus.

The group is working with the dean of students to identify ways to expand the number of so-called universal restrooms.

It’s an effort to cater to gay and transgender students, and other people who might require more privacy, like nursing mothers.

Dean of Students Tomas Aguirre says the change might be as easy as re-classifying existing single-stall restrooms as universal. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
