ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – They got the honor of starting the Mountain West Tournament. Yvonne Sanchez and her Lobo women didn’t know they would be going home so early.
The Lobos, usually a hard out in the conference tournament, lost on day one to a very determined Utah State Aggies team. The 69 to 66 Lobo loss came after a first round record 48 first half points by New Mexico.
The Lobos also tied the first round record for turnovers at 19 by a team in round one. That would be their undoing.
Four Lobos scored in double figures with Deeva Vaughn leading the way with 17 in her final game as a Lobo.
It was a game of two halves as the Lobos couldn’t seem to miss in the first half and settled for missed jump shots in the second half.
Head coach Sanchez said, “We had four people in double figures which should have been enough and uh, we just didn’t finish out again like we should have.”
Finishing out has been a problem for the Lobos the entire season. Their year, the Lobos finish the season wit an 11 and 19 overall record.
