ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Omaree Varela’s stepfather, Stephen Casaus, appeared in court on Monday for his drug arrest over the weekend. When confronted by a KRQE News 13 crew outside court, he said very little and tried to run away. His only response when asked him if there was anything he would like to say, he replied, “Can you please get away from me?”
Casaus was arrested for drugs on Sunday morning after a traffic stop by Albuquerque Police in the Northeast Heights. Officers say they saw him speeding and swerving through traffic. Once they pulled him over, he showed signs he had been drinking. Detectives say they also discovered he had drugs on him. There was evidence of cocaine, marijuana and what appeared to be black tar heroin in his SUV.
Casaus bonded out of jail after his arrest and on Monday, a Bernalillo County Metropolitan Judge continued his bond. Casaus is not facing charges in connection with Omaree’s death, but the District Attorney’s Office says it’s still investigating.
In an accidental 911 call from Casaus’ home made in June 2013, Casaus is heard yelling at Omaree. The boy would later die, allegedly kicked to death by his mother Synthia Varela-Casaus.
If he’s found guilty of the new drug charges, Stephen Casaus could face up to a year and a half in jail and a $5,000 fine. Synthia Varela-Casaus, Omaree’s mother, is in jail charged with the boy’s death.
