Inez elementary student reports attempted kidnapping

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – APS police are investigating an attempted kidnapping of an elementary student in northeast Albuquerque.

A fourth grade boy told police someone approached him just before nine this morning as he walked to Inez Elementary, near Pennsylvania and Constitution, and tried to abduct him.

He says the man told him the boy’s mother was in the hospital and he needed to come with him. But the boy knew something wasn’t right.

“The boy responded that he knew that wasn’t true and screamed and ran to school and reported it to the principal,” Monica Armenta, APS spokesperson, said.

The boy described the suspect as a younger man with dark hair and light skin, wearing a black shirt.

APS is sending a letter home to parents about the situation Monday.

There will be extra police patrolling the area Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
