DEA warns public of fake agents

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The Drug Enforcement Administration is warning New Mexicans about an extortion scheme involving impostors posing as DEA agents.

Agents say victims who buy prescription drugs over the internet or by telephone are being contacted by fake DEA agents who tell the victims they have broken the law.

The agency says the fake agents then demand the victims pay a fine and steal their personal information.

Officials say no DEA agent will demand money from residents for any reason.

Those contacted by suspected fake agents should call the DEA immediately. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
