Asthma ER visits highest in southeast NM

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A new report shows visits to the ER for asthma are higher there than in any other place.

The Department of Health report shows from 2010 to 2012, the rate of adults and kids in the southeast visiting the ER for asthma was nearly 63 per 10,000 population.

The report also says people in the southeast are no more likely to have asthma than people in other regions of the state, so health officials are questioning what’s behind the trend.

They say it’s possible that area has stronger environmental factors that might trigger the attacks, or that there is a lack of doctors to serve that area, prompting more people to visit the ER.

Another area with a high number of people visiting the ER for asthma is Taos County. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
