Same-sex couples to file joint returns

Same-sex marriage (KRQE News 13)

SANTA FE, NM (KRQE) – Some New Mexico same-sex couples are getting to experience something only their heterosexual counterparts used to be able to do; married gay couples can officially file joint returns this year.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports the first gay couple to get married in New Mexico says they’re happy about the change and getting the same benefits as heterosexual couples.

The Supreme Court last summer struck down part of the federal defense of marriage act that denied federal recognition of same-sex marriages.

The government said all same-sex couples’ legal marriages will be recognized for federal tax purposes. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
