ALBUQUERUQE (KRQE) It all came down to the final game Saturday night for the 21st ranked UNM Men Lobo’s Basketball team as the season ends with New Mexico squaring off with 10th ranked San Diego State. The winner? San Diego Aztecs were crowned the Mountain West regular season champs beating the UNM 51 to 48.
Last year when these two teams met at San Diego’s Viejas Arena, the Lobos were embarrassed scoring just 36 points in a loss to the Aztecs.
This looked a little familiar early in the first half Saturday evening as the Lobos went on a drought, not scoring for eight and a half minutes until Cullen Neal cuts the Aztecs lead to 5 with a lay-in waking SDSU sleeping giants Alex Kirk and Cameron Bairstow. That took New Mexico on to a 13-2 run to end the first half.
In the second half of play, the Lobos were firing on all cylinders jumping out to a 16 point lead at the midway point, however the Aztecs fight back and stun the Lobos in a 51-48 win for the Mountain West regular season title.
The UNM Men Lobo’s are now the two seed and will play Thursday night in the MWC.
