Theme song to hit HBO show has NM roots

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The show is a hit, and it’s making a hit out of the theme song, a song that’s from right here in Albuquerque.

KRQE News 13 sat down with the husband and wife duo behind the theme song to the popular HBO series, True Detective.

The song, “Far From Any Road,” one fans look forward to every week, originated in Albuquerque.

“Some of these very mics,” said Brett Sparks, pointing to equipment in his home studio.

Husband and wife, Brett and Rennie Sparks, also known as the Handsome Family, recorded the song “Far From Any Road,” now the theme song for the HBO hit True Detective, at their home studio Nob Hill, about ten years ago.

“So to have it just kind of be unearthed the way that it was is pretty – pretty exciting,” said Brett.

“I think the show and the song are both really just about mystery, and about how mystery adds pleasure to life really,” explained Rennie, who wrote the song lyrics.

She said the song is inspired by the mysteries of the desert. The couple didn’t know until the first episode that their song was officially picked for the intro.

“Its just an amazing moment in our lives,” recalled Rennie.

When asked if they like the show, Brett responded, “I think its fantastic, I think its brilliant, I watch the episodes over and over again.”

Now a hit starring Woody Harrelson and Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, the Handsome Family’s music has gone viral too.

“You know people love the song, they’re writing about the song, but they’re actually going out and buying records, I mean I’ve seen the numbers,” said Brett.

A writer from New York, Rennie pens the lyrics, and collaborates with Brett for music. They’ve been married 26 years, and have written songs together for 21 years.

Their music’s dark tones parallel themes in the show. “I’m a firm believer that you can’t enjoy the light in life without seeing a little bit of the shadows,” said Rennie.

The Handsome Family said they’re anxiously awaiting the final episode of this season’s True Detective this Sunday. “I don’t know how they’re gonna wrap it up, and I’ll definitely have withdraws when its not there every Sunday,” said Brett. “I really look forward to seeing it.”

They joked about the mystery of the Yellow King in the show – only adding, it’s not either of them.

The Handsome Family said they’re hoping their song will be used in future seasons or episodes. They’ll be touring in Europe next month. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
