ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The woman Albuquerque police say was using “sob stories” to prey on the elderly has been arrested.
Police say 26-year-old Ashley Martinez has been knocking on doors all around the city claiming her car broke down.
They say she would ask to use elderly homeowner’s phones and then would steal their purse or wallet. In one incident she even pushed someone down.
Victims were able to identify her by her tattoos.
Police started tracking her last night outside of a fast food restaurant in northeast Albuquerque.
When police tried to pull her over, they say she rammed a cop car and then ran off into a neighborhood.
Over a PA system, police told Martinez they would send a K9 to get her, so she surrendered.
Police say she stole from at least eight people, but they think there are more victims.
“Certainly just looking at her and getting that photo out, we’re glad we’re able to get that out because now we can tell the public regardless if she makes it back out onto the streets anytime soon the public can know her face and be aware of who she is and know that if she comes to your door you can’t trust her,” Officer Tasia Martinez said.
No officers were injured Wednesday night.
Martinez is facing a long list of burglary charges. She also had warrants out for other burglaries.
