Obama's budget could help with NM wildfires

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – President Barack Obama’s proposed 2015 budget will help New Mexico when the state is hit with big wildfires.

The president incorporated a proposal that would fund major wildfires the same as other natural disasters. It would also free up funding to prevent future fires.

Sen. Tom Udall said over the last several years, the federal government has underestimated the cost of wildfires, and it has had to borrow money from other programs to respond. This new plan finally puts the emphasis in the right place.

The budget still faces a vote by Congress.
