Archbishop visits MDC for Ash Wednesday

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Today is the first day of lent and the Archbishop is trying to help those in jail turn their lives around.

Archbishop Michael Sheehan distributed ashes at each unit of the Metro Detention Center Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday is a traditional Christian period of repentance for 40 days and 40 nights prior to Easter.

Following tradition, the Archbishop placed ashes on the foreheads of each inmate and staff member.

“As the Archbishop I want to serve those in law enforcement as well as those who are incarcerated for different things that they’ve done,” Archbishop Michael Sheehan said.

Sheehan says they do have a partnership set up at mdc to help inmates stay out of trouble once they are out of the system. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
