Obama’s budget may prevent horse slaughter

ROSWELL, N.M. (KRQE) – President Barack Obama unveiled his 2015 budget Tuesday and in it, a provision would prevent horse slaughter in the country.

The budget withholds money for federal inspections at horse slaughterhouses.

The ban derailed Roswell’s Valley Meat Company’s plans to slaughter horses and export the meat overseas.

A measure approved by Congress earlier this year also withholds money, but that measure is set to expire this September.

The president’s budget would extend it another year.
