ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – An Old Town business owner went out of business overnight.
Mike Whitney has been giving rides to tourists on his pedicab for years.
But, sometime Sunday night, someone stole it. Now he’s hoping the public will help track it down.
Whitney has been giving tourists a ride through old town for 16 years on his pedi cab.
“I do an Old Town historical sightseeing tour. I take my customers through all of old town,” whitney said. “I always start out at the church. And we take off from there.”
But on Monday, he lost his job.
“This morning, I went outside to come to work and my pedicab wasn’t in my car port,” Whitney said. “Someone stole it overnight last night.”
Whitney lives and kept his pedicab about two blocks from Old Town. The loss of his peddling taxi is devastating.
“It’s my livelihood,” he said. “If I don’t get it back, I’ll probably be homeless because it’s my sole income. That’s my whole life, really.”
Beverly Lacey, and Old Town store owner, said, “I can’t believe someone would stoop so low as to take someone’s livelihood away. That’s what the man does for a living and we all try to help him out.”
Other Old Town business owners and vendors are angry, saying it’s the only tour available right now.
Whitney doesn’t understand why thieves would take his peddling taxi in the first place.
“I don’t know what they’re going to do with it,” he said. “It’s huge.”
But, because it’s so huge, he’s hoping someone will see it soon.
Whitney believes he has the only four wheel pedicab in the state. It cost him $5,000.
