UNM celebrates 125 years

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The University of New Mexico is celebrating a major milestone and students are excited.

On Friday, UNM paid homage to its 125th anniversary.

UNM opened in 1889 as a red brick building on a mesa.

Friday’s festivities started with a homecoming video about UNM’s history. Later, there was a birthday party at the Student Union Building.

UNM President Bob Frank says the anniversary gives students and staff a chance to reflect, but also to look forward.

“We have to think about how we offer classes how our faculty works,” Frank said. “And we’re going with those adjustments. It’s a big period of change and we have to think about everything we do. How we offer classes, how our faculty work. We’re proud of what we’re doing.”

Officials say the anniversary celebration will continue throughout the year. It will also be the theme for homecoming.
