DNA solves 2-year-old burglary

RIO RANCHO, N.M. (KRQE) – DNA helped detectives solve a nearly two-year-old burglary case.

Santa Fe police say they have arrested 21-year-old Skylar Smith of Albuquerque.

He allegedly broke into a pickup In 2012 and stole a UNM Lobo cap and a pair of gloves, but police say he left his own cowboy hat behind.

That hat was sent in for DNA testing and authorities say it was a match to a cigarette butt left inside a vehicle in Rio Rancho that was also burglarized.

Santa Fe police arrested Smith. He’s charged with burglary and larceny.
