ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Something new and very New Mexico is coming to the Botanic Garden at the Albuquerque Bio Park.
Work has begun on the new High Desert Rose Garden which is going in next to the Japanese Garden.
The Japanese Garden will be closed to visitors for several days while crews work.
The project also includes a 1,400 square foot glass house, that can be used for weddings and the new garden will have a New Mexico feel to it.
“We’re going to be using stonework, boulders on the berm, we’re going to have all 5 of new Mexico’s wild rose species, other desert species of roses. So when you come into the Rose Garden it will not look like an English kind of a Rose Garden. It’s going to look very New Mexico,” Botanic Garden Manager Catherine Hubbard said.
The High Desert Rose Garden cost $1.5 million which is coming from the Biopark Society and Capital Improvement Funds.
The new garden is expected to open in Spring 2015.
