Bernalillo Commissioners OK inmate housing funds

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Bernalillo County will continue transferring inmates out of the county to help relieve overcrowding issues at Metropolitan Detention Center.

In a close vote of 3 to 2, County Commissioners approved more than $3.3 million to pay for housing inmates in New Mexico and Texas.

In 2013 MDC was housing more than 2,600 inmates, which is approximately 350 over capacity.

The over capacity issue, violates a federal lawsuit filed against the county almost 20 years ago. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
