New brain tumor treatment at UNM Cancer Center

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A new state-of-the-art treatment for brain tumors has arrived at the UNM Cancer Center, it’s called Stereotactic Radiosurgery.

The procedure allows doctors to focus a set of X-ray beams on a single point inside the brain, killing cancer cells with a single large dose.

In other cancer treatments radiation is given slowly over weeks and can damage good tissue.

Doctors say the procedure is non-invasive and can help preserve a patient’s strength.

The UNM Cancer Center has successfully treated its first patient using the new process and says the results are encouraging. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
