ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – A new state-of-the-art treatment for brain tumors has arrived at the UNM Cancer Center, it’s called Stereotactic Radiosurgery.
The procedure allows doctors to focus a set of X-ray beams on a single point inside the brain, killing cancer cells with a single large dose.
In other cancer treatments radiation is given slowly over weeks and can damage good tissue.
Doctors say the procedure is non-invasive and can help preserve a patient’s strength.
The UNM Cancer Center has successfully treated its first patient using the new process and says the results are encouraging.
