APS Police chief on paid leave

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The man leading the police force for Albuquerque public schools is under investigation.

APS placed Chief Steve Tellez on paid leave Monday afternoon although the district will not say why. Officials are only saying it was a “personnel issue” and that there is an investigation underway.

However, sources close to the APS Police Department say it has to do with ammo disappearing from the storage locker. Tellez is one of a few people with a key to that room.

Tellez became chief of APS Police about four years ago after the previous Chief Bill Reed stepped down.

Tellez has been a controversial figure in the past.

Within months of his promotion from deputy chief to chief, about a third of the police union voted “no confidence” in him.
