Community gathers for murdered boy

VALENCIA COUNTY, N.M. (KRQE) – Family and friends held a candlelight vigil in Valencia County on Friday night to remember a 12-year-old boy murdered earlier this week.

More than 100 people gathered in this field in Meadow Lake where Alex Madrid’s body was found under a mattress.

Police say his friend,15-year-old Brandon Villalobos killed him.

Madrid’s friends have planted a tree and made a stone garden in his memory.

“He was treating my family good, he was like a brother to me. I loved him with all my heart, too,” said Johnathan Ornelas.

Villalobos is being held at the juvenile jail.

His attorney says he’s developmentally delayed.

Prosecutors are deciding whether they’ll try him as an adult. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
