Major traffic switch, construction begins on Paseo Project

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – Drivers need to prepare for big changes around the Paseo Del Norte I-25 Interchange project.

Starting Friday night, construction begins for a major traffic shift along Paseo Del Norte, from the railroad tracks to I-25.

The lanes will be under major construction to prepare for the switch. It impacts all east and westbound traffic on Paseo Del Norte. Drivers will have to detour into the right lanes when it’s finished.

Contractors will be working on what they call a “grade separation” at Paseo Del Norte and Jefferson. The goal is to make traffic flow faster.

“Paseo Del Norte will actually go over Jefferson and there will be a single point urban interchange underneath Paseo Del Norte,” said Sally Reeves of the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

One area business owner says the road work has cost her hundreds of customers, so this time around she has a new game plan.

“I’m doing everything I can. I’m really marketing the west side of town where it’s really not obstructed, because the east and south people have really stopped coming,” said Melanie St. Georges, owner of Blissful Spirits Hot Yoga.

The major switch construction starts 9 o’clock Friday night and will be complete Sunday night. That’s when the traffic switch will take place.
