400 pounds of dog food stolen from shelter

ESPANOLA (KRQE) – Someone stole about 400 pounds of dog food from a New Mexico animal shelter, and it’s not the first time it’s been hit by thieves.

The latest case happened overnight Wednesday at the Española Valley Humane Society.

Shelter officials say someone broke into a locked shed and made off with about $1,200 worth of puppy and adult dog food.

They say the food went to a program that gives it to needy families for their pets.

Once the word got out about the theft, the community stepped in and started donating.

“Everybody here comes to work full time to help the community and help the animals, so it was pretty disheartening,” said Megan Sharkey, who works at the shelter. “But our staff is feeling much better about the community and the world that people have shown this kind of support.”
