DOE investigates WIPP radiation mishap

CARLSBAD, N.M. (KRQE) – The U.S. Department of Energy is investigating the second mishap at the WIPP site near Carlsbad in just weeks.

They’re still trying to find the source of the radiation discovered Friday. The airborne radiation was detected underground.

The government says it never made it to the surface and no one got sick, but crews have not been able to go back underground to investigate the source.

It’s unclear when crews will be able to return.

On Feb. 5, there was a fire inside a truck at the WIPP site which forced an evacuation. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
